Q re topical skin ointments

I've seen a lot of references in this list to using Desitin for both horse
and rider, from girth sores to knee-chafing under tights.

I'm new to horse ownership and am getting a bit confused by all the
different topical skin ointments and when each is best used: furazone,
Corona, Cut-Heal, now people stuff like Nu-Skin and Desitin.

I've been using furazone on open wounds (like horse-bites and cuts), and
Cut-Heal on scrapes and rubbed-raw spots with little or no broken skin
(and on other wounds after they've closed up, to help the hair grow
back), and Corona in place of either. Is Desitin a good substitute for
either or both of these, or is it just convenient for trail use because
it comes in a little tube for your saddle bag instead of a big round
plastic jar (and because you can use it on rider too)?

My horse now has some raw spots on his belly, in a line right down the
middle lengthwise, where the flies are chewing him bloody. I've been
using furazone and Swat, but the sores are getting worse. I wondered
whether Desitin would be a good choice for this, since the menthol should
repel flies? But would the Desitin burn the really raw spots? Would
Nu-Skin be better at protecting the raw spots from the flies, so the skin
could heal?

Everyone at my barn has a different opinion, of course, so I thought I
would ask this list, since you ride harder and longer than anyone else I
know, meaning you probably get more wounds too! No one at my barn has
ever used Desitin, either, nor even thought of using it on a horse.
