LD RACES?

I'm sure that I will hear some heat about this, but I too have seen alot
of newbies to this sport ( not that I have earned my veteran title yet)
forget that LD should not be an all out race. I have been in the market for
another horse for a while, and have spoken to alot of different people with
horses for sale. It seems that I remember speaking to quite a few people
with limited endurance experience, and upon finding out that I wanted a
horse for such a purpose, would say things like " Oh, this horse place 2nd in
his first 25 mile ride" or " We would have won the 25, but I was happy with
5th" Comments like that definitly scared me off purchasing the horse.
When I did my first ride, a 35 with my appaloosa, it seemed that the
pace and the attitude was really more relaxed, and I felt alot of the
"Finish is to Win" motto being taken seriously.
I don't think 50's are for everyone, nor are 100's, so I feel that
there is an important place for LD rides. I do agree that there should not
be placings for LD, just completion. That's all I ever got when I did them,
and I was very happy with having a fit horse afterward.

Isn't that what it's really all about anyway, no matter where you
place?
