We travel long distances a lot - hell it takes five hours to get out of FL
on the shortest path! I have found the following to work quite well for
our horses. We stop every two hours for normal reasons, bathroom, fuel,
etc. When we stop the first thing I do is open the horses dooors and hang
two gallon buckets full in front of them. I also keep hay in front of them
all the time so I fill hay bags if necessary. After I have done this I go
do take care of why we stopped. If they finish two gallons I fill the
buckets again. When we are finished with the stop we are off.

This way the horses get a chance to drink and get a rest from moving, but
don't really add much time to the trip. I plan on a day of 10 to 12 hours
driving - getting there and letting them get a good nights rest. I try to
find campgrounds where I can set up the fence and give them space to move
around. This can usually be done. When you are going from central FL to
Utah a few extra minutes here and there really adds up and impacts the
trip.
