missing heart beats

How common is it for endurance horses to miss heart beats and why do
they do it?

I had always assumed it was the ultra fit horses that did it, but on
Sunday we were told our mare (who only does 25s) was missing
every 7th beat at the start of the ride, and was still missing a few
beats at the end, but not so regularly.
She's 12 yrs old, done a couple of seasons of mainly long, slow
distance (about 7-8mph usually), and this is the first time its
been mentioned, though her heart rate has been much lower this year
than ever before (32 before the ride, 36 after).

Is there some advantage to missing beats rather than just having a
slower heart beat?
