I played around with different materials for a while (never tried mountain
rope though) and I ended up with sailing rope (there might be a more specific
name that I don't know - I just bought what felt the best). I went to a big
sailing supply store and found excactly what I was looking for: lightweight,
not too stiff and not too soft, doesn't slip and doesn't get soggy when wet
(!!!) but keeps it's shape and grip - I guess that's what they want for
watersports. It comes in a variety of seizes (thickness) and is usually sold
by the foot. I think mine was $7 for 9 feet (???or maybe $9 for 7'?) plus two
scissor snaps.
I think everybody has different expectations though and what works for me
might not work for you. A friend who rides with me sometimes tried my reins
and didn't like them (to bulky). It's a good idea to go and check for
yourself, even if the guys at the sailing store, REI etc. look at you like
you're from outer space when you tell them why you're fumble around so
much...
