Your horse may have the makings of a GREAT endurance horse--but not because
he is a mustang. There seems to be this feeling floating around among some
horse enthusiasts that just because a horse is a "mustang" he must be some
kind of a super horse. A "mustang" is simply a feral horse, and the kind of
animal that can live and reproduce on it's own in scrub desert or sparse
mountain pasture is not NECESSARILY the kind of animal one might want to
ride. that is why people started selectively breeding horses in the first
place.
Best way to find out if your mustang has what it takes for endurance is
to give it a whirl! Reading some good books on conformation would be helpful
as well--Dr. Deb Bennett has a good series on conformation in EQUUS
magazine--I subscribe to this mag. almost exclusively for this series and
have learned a lot. Phone # for subscriptions is 303-678-0439.Deb Bennett
has also written books on the subject--Principles of Conformation. The
SPORTACK catalog has a list of books on endurance riding, phone
1-510-934-6838 for a catalog. Hope this info helps a little.
