Yet another helmut topic!

I grew up never wearing helmuts.

But that changed two years ago. Our neighbor, a 45-year old farmer with
three kids, was longeing a yearling. He tripped and fell, spooking the
yearling who kicked him in the head. The man was instantly blinded.

Now his kids are 12, 8, and 4. His wife works full-time and the farm's
rented out. It's hard to make ends meet, and I'm sure he's getting some
sort of disability check. (Relying on society.) But the real shame is all
the pain the family's gone through. And it really has been hard to the man
to adjust to. It's not the blindness so much as the frustration he feels
for not being able to take care of his family.

I, like many other horsemen, can recount other examples of head injuries.
What I always tell my students is you probably won't need a helmut if
you're wearing one, but as soon as you don't have one on, something'll
probably go wrong. I also work my horses alone, and if an accident
happened, I can deal with broken bones, but not a busted head.

I don't believe in seat belt laws. I don't believe in helmut laws. But
wearing helmuts and seat belts should be such a common part of our society
as wearing shoes, bras and jock straps. The only difference being the
helmut cares for something far more valuable than shoes, bras, or jock
straps. ( Of course, some people might argue with me on that one.)

Should kids wear helmuts?

Should kids brush their teeth?
