I also ride against traffic most of the time - there are spots tho that I
ride with the traffic based on whatever - dogs, mailboxes, blind curve/hill,
etc....My horses pretty much know which side to be on as we go along.

I get more respect when I'm on foot than I do when I'm on the horse. I dunno
- guess people think it's no big deal to bother a horse with a person on it
but it's not okay to bother a horse with the person on the ground.
Unfortunately I have found that i have to often ride into the road to make
drivers go around me - I know what the rules are - I'm supposed to be on the
side/shoulder but I draw the line when people pass me so close their side
mirrors brush my leg. And I ride on county roads where there is a lot of
traffic but rarely so much that the driver passing me couldn't move over to
go around me.

What I have figured out is if I'm on the shoulder where I'm supposed to be
they act like I'm not there - don't slow down at all, don't move over an
inch. But if I'm riding a foot or so into the road they will at least move
over - still don't slow down usually.

I *hate* road riding - hate it, hate it, hate it - been doing it for years -
have no choice if I want to get in any conditioning or any riding besides
ring work during the week.
