I am posting this message to more than one list so my apologies to
anyone that feels it isn't on topic.

A friends horse was diagnosed with Lymes disease (sp?) in Dec/96.
Diagnosis was verified by blood test. His blood shows exposure to
Lymes at any rate.

His symptoms were vague stiffness, resistance to bending and loss of
flexibility. He became tender to touch in the girth area on one side
of his barrel. This soreness has migrated back to the flank area then
down under his barrel to the high inner sides of his hind legs.

Treatment: 25 x 100mg Doxycycline 2 x day

He does not appear to be responding to treatment which has been going
on for 5 weeks. His owner luckily is a licensed pharmacist and gets
medications at wholesale prices. Her concern is wether the dosage is
sufficient. Horse is 16.3 hand Han/TB cross with an estimated weight
of 1300 lb. This is the vets first case of Lymes disease and she has
been consulting with Cornell university.

Owner is trying to learn more about treatment/medication and possible
sources of information/research to pass on to her vet. She is very
concerned about her horse. As a bizarre coincidence, her brother has
had Lymes for TWO YEARS and is still not cured. He was originally
misdiagnosed then under medicated. He has been on continuous
medication since and relapses every time his medication is stopped!!!

I had no idea that this disease is so difficult to deal with. Please
anyone with info, experience or references please respond to me and I
will pass it on to my desoerate friend.
