The chief reason for numbering a horse is to indentify the HORSE! I was
crewing on the SC 100 when I can upon a lose horse, saddled, with number on
his butt, galloping down the road in the middle of nowhere (off trail by
miles). If I had not seen the number and known a ride was going on, I would
not have known where to bring the horse. We ponied him out the truck window
for three miles to the nearest vet check where the owner (dumped somewhere)
could retrieve him.

I might also say this was a 25 miler who was "racing" on a green horse using
just a halter (no bit or bridle)...else I would have ridden him instead of
ponying him.

This was the only way ride management at that vet check knew someone was out
there on foot (or worse).
