I'm no expert, but I know it's not good for your horse to suddenly change
feeds. When it's cold, more hay is better than more grain. The digestive
process produces more heat from hay. If you're going to change or add
different feed, do it gradually over a period of about 7 days. I do this
even when changing types of hay. You also need to make sure your horse is
drinking plenty of water. They tend to not drink cold water. Colic is a big
danger in colder weather for this reason. Try giving warm water a couple of
times a day. Providing ample salt is another way to encourage drinking and
it helps them retain water . Your horse may be reacting more to being kept
stalled or from the change in temperature. Do you blanket?
