Been there, done that. Very embarassing to ride your horse 50 miles
and get back and ice your own legs down! What fixed the problem for
me was to spend the winter months with a dressage instructor who
specialized in seat. Twice a week for 1/2 hour, on the end of a lunge
line with no reins, no stirrups and lots of coaching. I learned to
"sit" not "stand", and have never had shin splints again. I now ride
with non-flex stirrups that just have a wider foot pad. Still have to
remind myself every now and then to not stand, soften the ankle,
relaxxxxzzzzz (german instructor).
