Being a long distance runner, I can tell you if I had to run a
race that went back to the start and out again more than a few
times it would totally drive me crazy. I might as well go down
to the track and run around there. This is one of the reasons
I find track very boring. I now mostly do trail running, which
I find much more visually stimulating and challenging.

Now not every horse is bothered by this, but these are long distance
horses and to keep them stimulated and fresh, they need new scenery.
Horses certainly aren't dumb. Think of all the times you ride out
and you go to turn around and your horse gets ampted as he gets
closer and closer to home.
