One thing that worked well at a ride I went to years ago for new riders follows:
At the pre-ride meeting, the ride manager and veterinarian welcomed the limited
distance riders, explaining that it is a training ride to introduce
people/horses to the sport. All finishers would "show" for finishing the ride
in excellent condition, with special recognition given to those horses that
looked great (multiple awards). Because the 25 mile ride was a training ride,
not a race, finishes would be announced in alphabeticle order by horses name!
The ride manager then asked if this was anyone's first ride, and if they would
like to be paired up with someone that had been thru a ride before to help or
act as a "mentor". There were a few people that spoke up. These first-timers
got to ride with someone that was able to explain things. Everyone had a blast
- in both the 50 and the 25 mile ride.
For some reason, I only saw this at one ride. I don't know why it hasn't
carried over to other rides, as it was very successful.
