We routinely travel long distances to rides. We have two or three rides in
FL every year. The next closest ride is six hours and the next closes is
10 hours. If I go to the OD it is 18 hours. We at least three 12 plus
hour drives every year. If possible break up the drive and let the horses
unwind. I go between 8 to 12 hours a day and I do not get the horses out.
The worse possible thing I could envision is a loose horse on the road.
But we do stop ofter and hand water buckes on their doors for several
minutes. They get all the hay they want. Yes they do get a little
dehydrated, but that is usually solved by stopping overnight.

I have found KOA's to be great. Many have fields where you can set up a
portable corral. I have only found two or theee that do not take horses.
They don't advertise, but if you call and talk to them they are more than
happy to help. In fact we are known at the KOA in Point South, SC. It is
9 hours from home and about 6 hours to Ashville (Biltmore ride), 4 hours
to the SC 100, and 9 hours to the OD. We stay there on the way up and back
form these rides, which makes a total of 4 to 6 times a year. We are
regulars, we have our "own" camp site right in front of the woods we set up
the corral for the horse. It works out real well.
