25 mile rides

OK, I'm late in responding. I've been playing with that
new baby of mine. He should be a great endurance horse,
he already does miles in laps around mom. :-)

The limited distance rides I've been on this year have used
the BC scores as the placements for all finishers. The time
for completition is only used if the other scores tie.
Your finishing time is the time your horse comes down to
criteria. Your weight is figured in. I haven't seen the
score card, so I don't know all that they figure. Immediately
after you have passed the P&R, you go to the finish vet.
The finish vet for the 25 is different than the one for the 50
so they don't have a conflict with too many horses in different
events trying to get to the same vet. The finish vet does
the regular end of ride check and the BC check at the same time.
You don't get an hour to rest, work out the kinks or tighten up.

On the first ride this year, the guy that finished first didn't
even get a completion. The guy that took first finished about
5th. I finished an hour or so later and took second. It was
interesting to see people's reaction when they found out where
they placed. In both the pre-ride printed material sent with the
entry form, and at the pre-ride meeting, riders were told
that conditioning would tell who won, rather than time. I think
the organizers and vets did a great job.

I would be more than happy to have a lower recovery criteria.
Drake walks into the checks with a 52 to 54 pulse, so I wouldn't
have a problem finishing. He came in once with a 48. I figured
I wasn't pushing him hard enough.
