Having the (to me awful) job of facing up to 50 25 milers in the preride
and awards meetings....you, the ride manager, have a great deal of
influence on how the ride is ridden, but cannot control or bar racers. To
avoid controversy, state the objective plainly at the preride meeting.
Invest in really good completion awards. Do creative things, like announce
vet scores, recognize those horses who got "straight A's", recognize first
timers, furtherest distance travelled, (and Linda has a great one...bad
helmet hair!). With all this going on, the first to finish will feel
pretty SMALL. Get together with other ride managers and have them do the
same. We've pretty much eliminated burners on the 25, moreso it seems,
than on the 50!
