Another possibility might be that a loop of bowel started to twist or get
itself entrapped (there's a ligament between the kidney and spleen that's
notorious for this) and then managed to get itself put right before it got
worse.  The intestines are packed fairly loosely in the abdomen, and aren't
tacked in place and have a nasty habit of migrating their way into positions
they don't belong.
