NM AERC NC
I was not able to attend the AERC NC in KY so I can't comment on the
trail except to say that I am absolutely sure it was very challenging and
of national calibre. As to the 2000 AERC NC at Ft Stanton, NM...that
event was not only challenging, but required a lot of planning for the
trail and logistics of competing..it was not a trail that favored speed
over good planning (and a little luck). You had to know when to get off,
when to tail, when to make time, and most especially, to not be
intimidated by the trail. Another interesting statistic from the 2000
AERC NC...excellent completion percentage for a national calibre trail -
which I attribute to smart riders,...we had lameness pulls, but very few
metabolic pulls and only one or two treatments.
As to the NC in NM..it is true that 4 of the first five finishers in the
100 mile event were HWTS..Jerry Fruth from Indiana, Earle Baxter from
Canada, Boyd Carson from NM, and Kevin Waters from AZ (and
Illinois)...This trail did not favor any particular region..it did give
smart, strong riders on well conditioned horses a slight
advantage..especially if they were "bold" in their riding style when the
trail allowed it and conservative where it required it.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Wasn't a heavyweight first place at the NC in
New Mexico?
