[RC] 19th Century LD Factoid - Linda B. Merims

I was browsing through old horse prints at a
gallery on Newbury Street in Boston yesterday
and I came across a print that commemorated
a new "world" record set in the 1880's...

    A Hambletonian/TB cross had trotted 20 miles
in harness in 58 minutes and change.  He
was pulling a high-wheeled wooden sulky
on dirt roads.  The print gave all the splits
    and what-not.

    Evidently these kind of medium-to-long-distance
harness trotting records were quite the thing
    in 19th century America.
