RE: [RC] Finish Line question for LD Riders - Bob Morris

    steph:

I think it very important that the philosophy behind such a
change be made evident prior to any decision. It would seem
a bit strange to see the listing of the winner finishing
eight minutes behind the third place horse. In fact not only
    strange but quite questionable.

Let us take a close look at the current rules:

L5.3 Riding time is the time used by competitors to
    complete the course
and reach criteria, excluding all hold times. This is the
time used for AERC ride results.

L5.4 At the finish ride time of the competitor continues
    until a preset
veterinary criteria of 60 heartbeats per minute or less is
    met.
Finishing time is recorded as the time at which the rider
    asks for and subsequently
meets this preset criteria). There is no marked finish
    line on the course that
is used to determine placing or completion time.

L7. If placements are given, they must be determined using
the procedure described in 5.3 and 5.4.
The ride results will be posted in this order, but no points
for placement or for completion will be awarded.

L8. The AERC shall record Best Condition points and Mileage
for members in Limited Distance rides.
All Best Condition points and all miles remain in the
Limited Distance Program and are not transferable.

Now, in reading the above you will see that a rider has not
completed the ride until the pulse has met criteria. This
distinction was purposely made as a deterrent to racing in
at the finish. So time for finish for BC is determined by
when the ride is completed, the time pulse recovery is
    noted.

Now you would change it to a point where the first horse to
recover to criteria, and thus winning the competition, could
be ranked third or so on the time factor for BC! This is
contrary to all concepts of Limited Distance Competition.
Losing points in LD BC because you were a bit cautious at
the finish and won the ride but lost BC to some one who was
incautious? No, this is not rational thinking.

Subject: [RC] Finish Line question for LD Riders

I have a question for you guys:

One of the AERC directors is proposing a Rules change to LD,
    where the LD
rider's finish time would be determined by when they cross
    the finish line,
rather than when the horse's pulse reaches criteria. In this
    proposal the
placement (first, second, third, etc) of each competitor
    would then be
determined separately by when their horse's pulse reaches
    criteria.

So your ride time would be determined by when you cross the
    finish line.
This is the time that would be published in AERC results,
    PNER results, etc,
and this is the time that would be used to calculate BC
    scores.

But placement is entirely different - it is determined by
    when the horse
    reached criteria.

I would love to hear some opinions on this -

    Steph
