    I recommend a water proof rump rug for cold rains (say 30 to 45 degrees).  I made mine by covering a piece of polar fleece with rain coat coated nylon fabric.
     
    If you don't like sweating to death you have to spring for a Goretex rain suit.  There are also cheaper immatations that work almost as well.  Check out REI coop or Cabellas or another sporting goods supplier.  The pants made of bicyclers work better than those for hunters.  You may have to duck tape them down to prevent their riding up.
     
    Cold rains can cause horses to cramp up.  Walk them and blanket them at stops.  If riding for recreation or training, stop before they get really tired.
     
    My mother always believed that cold and wet caused colds and flu.  Myself, I subscribe to the virus theory.
