What Ray is describing is very common with young TWH. Until they are 5-6
years old, they aren't "set" in their gaits. Also, if you're not used to
riding a TWH, getting a good flat walk or running walk out of them can be
difficult. If you set the head too low you get a trot. Too high, a pace.
Also, the fact that the horse had been ridden at a hard pace for several
hours may mean that he no longer had the energy to easily do a good running
walk.
