Is "going for the Gold" and admirable facet or should that
be condemned and every one satisfied with being a part of
    the lowest common denominator?

If there is a possibly unattainable goal should we not even
    try?

While I was initially intrigued by Matthew's ideas when he
    explained
them to me, I'm not sure they would really work the way he
    intended them
to. He said it is a matter of the rewards. I rode the Old
    Dominion
100, and I finished 3rd, trotting in 7 seconds behind the
    leader. I was
quite pleased by my finish, but I think that perhaps Matthew
    set the
standards a bit high, for while we finished at 11:30, not a
    bad time, no
one would have received a gold. Had such a system been in
    place I may
have been tempted to try to ride even faster in order to be
    in the gold
category. Now I'm not saying that would be a good idea, or
    the best
stewardship of my horse, but the human side of me might have
    set that as
a goal for myself. So while I feel there is some merit in
    his ideas and
in this discussion, the standards were set very high, and
    might have led
some of us astray if that was how the competition was
    actually being
run, instead of just a trial model.
