RE: [RC] Early Signs of WNV - Whiteaker, Steve

    Ed -

I don't understand the Nov booster for MN & WI horses. The mosquitoes are
usually gone by early Oct. If the effect of the booster only lasts 6 months,
then a Nov booster would loose its effectiveness before the mosquitoes
became a problem the next spring.

For MN & WI horses, an annual booster in April would seem to make more
sense. Unless, of course, you're going to be taking your horse to an area
    where mosquitoes are still active.

One of our ride vets, who is in the midst of an epidemic of WNV (she has had
30 cases in her practice, and lost 4 ) is recommending: 1. wait until after
this bug season if you haven't given the 3rd shot. She has had a couple of
horses get sick right after the 3rd shot and thinks they were fighting WNV,
and the extra challenge of the vaccine diverted the immune system from
fighting the disease. 2. Plan on continuing with 6 month boosters from here
on. In MN WI this means Nov and May. 3. Things and recommendations are
changing so keep in touch with your vet. He/she will know more in a few
months. Ed. Ed and Wendy Hauser 1140 37th Street Hudson, WI 54016
