My husband is 6'3 and when he rides, rides a purebred mare that is 14.2.
He is about 210 with tack and she carries his weight as easily as she
carries my 40lb son with his 6lb saddle, even now when she is due to foal in
November. His feet do hang *slightly* below her belly, but she has width
and substance to take up enough of his leg that he can properly cue her with
his calves.
I agree with whoever said it depends on how the horse is built, if they have
a good back and some substance. Many times a rider requiring a taller horse
is more a product of the rider thinking they would feel 'silly' on a smaller
horse (could that have anything to do with stuff like Betty's laughing
comment early in this thread?)
I do think 13.2 might be a little small for someone who is 6'4, but if they
really like the horse personally, and it is a well-built and solid little
horse, they need to take it for some test rides and see how they feel on it.
I've always be a proponent of the 14.2 average, but was a little skeptical
of me riding 13.3 mare we purchased for the kids... but I *love* her. I'm
5'6 and about 160 w/tack and she carries me, and fits my leg as well as my
relatively taller horses.
