[RC] Gold fish and ice - Magnumsmom

As long as the tank does not freeze solid and as long as
there is enough O2 exchange for the number of fish in
your trough, the fish should live. Use a heater with a
cage on it to remind them to stay away from the element.
A fish frozen in a block of ice is a dead fish.

A long time ago someone here on Ridecamp recommended
digging out under your stock tank and filling the space
with rocks (and air) and that will help keep your tank
from freezing. Good idea. Difficult to do if you live
    on sold rock.

I don't know about feeding stock tank fish, but if you
feed them, you will want to stop feeding them when the temperature of the water reaches 50F. A bit of sand or
muck in the bottom of the tank will give them a place to
hide all winter. They slow down with the temp drops.

Of course if you have a fish stomping beast like Maryben
then they don't stand a chance... might serve her right
though for buying expensive Koi. Rule of thumb: the more
you pay for the fish the faster it dies...
