Re: [RC] Norco Riverdance Ride - Julie Herrera

Well Lif, in the past we PS riders have been very spoiled. We stand at the
water trough sponging our horse and call out "P/R" when we wanted our horses
checked. This made the P/R people have to traipse through the mud, not
always going to the first person who called out. But the riders like it
because heaven forbid the horse has to take one step which could possibly
make the heart rate jump up <BG>

So this year we did the P/R box method. When a rider comes into a VC they
were given a "green slip" piece of paper with the In time on it. It has two
more lines: Recovery, and Out time. When the riders horse has met criteria
they go to the P/R timer who records the Recovery time and calculates the
Out time. Then the rider enters the P/R box where a pulse taker verifies
that the horse is down. If all is good a check mark was put next to
Recovery .If the horse was not down the Recovery and Out times where
scratched out and the rider had to leave the box and go through the line
again. I liked this method because if more than one rider approached the
P/R timer at once they were all given the same time. It took pressure off
of the pulse takers to be in a hurry. It also made the riders more
responsible to know their horses HR. We did have courtesy check takers
    outside the box.

I think overall it worked better than hanging out at the water troughs. The
only confusion we had was whether the P/R timer or the actual pulse taker
was to calculate the out time. It seemed to work better when the pulse
taker did it. That way the P/R timer could write slips faster when there
was more than one rider to deal with. Also, if the horse was not down yet,
there would only be one line to cross out. Using the green slips eliminates
the need to call out for a time. I hate all that yelling going back and
forth and numbers often get mixed up.
