    As I haven't followed all the posts on this, I may be duplicating
    previous info. on how to stop a runaway.  Using what's known as a "pully
    rein" technique has the best results, I've found.  That's where you grab
    mane, holding one rein very short & and grip mane & rein  firmly; with
    the opposite hand & rein held at about your upper chest height, pull up
    & back with all our strength!  (See the wonderful booklet, "Horsemanship
    in Pictures", by Susan Harris, page 6 for an illustration.)  Years ago I
    ran a summer riding camp for beginners, and no one got to go off the
    longe line until they demonstrated working knowledge of two skills:  1.
    How to execute an emergency dismount at all gaits;  2.  How to use the
    "pulley rein" technique for stopping a runaway.
    
    These are basic skills every rider should know.
