Re: [RC] Edges - Megan Capon
About the "not looking" theory: This is absolutely true in my experience.
When I worked on a ranch, the lady I worked for ALWAYS told new riders the
surest way to end up with their horse's foot in a hole was to keep looking
at it. The best way to keep from getting in it was to keep your eye on the
horizon and "visualize" yourself going over no problem. Even with
inexperienced riders it worked better than 90% of the time.
I'm mostly working with 2 skijoring dogs these days, and on a sled dog board
recently there was a thread about how animals "read" thoughts. Just think
about turning at a junction without saying or doing anything, and
startlingly often the animal will take the correct path.
A few years ago I rode a 3yo onto the trail for the first time, and I just
mentally insisted it would be no big deal... that poor little colt got
tangled up in vine maple on an overgrown trail, he never hit the panic
button once (and he's capable, trust me). "Sure, we've got branches stuck in
the pommel and in your bridle, this is kinda boring compared to the area
isn't it, howzabout I just get off while you stand still and I start
breaking sticks until we're clear."
Lord forgive me, I'm such a liar. :)
Body language? Telepathic communication? Take your pick, but try it for fun
if nothing else- it DOES work.

we vowed to search the highways for an honest man.
But when we looked into each other?s eyes,
we knew it would be best to make some other plan."
