    [RC] Tevis - Ridecamp Guest

    Nancy Elliot hossdoc@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Just a couple of facts that might help out about Tevis. First, at the Tevis, the AERC best condition form IS NOT in use. The award is called The Haggin Cup, and is chosen by the veterinary staff AND the "Cup Committee", who have been watching at all vet checks all day and also are evaluating horsemanship and sportsmanship by the RIDER (what a concept, huh?!) For most of us who ride, vet, crew or in any way participate in this amazing ride, this award really is about the highest achievement one can aspire to. Time and weight are not factored in in a formula like with AERC. The vets evaluate the horses, present their first, second and third choices to the Cup Committee, who then takes into consideration all of the committee members' observations from throughout the race, and chooses the Haggin Cup winner. Usually it's just a confirmation of the vet decision. One of the reasons this year's Haggin Cup winner is so prominently featured is that the rider, Hal Hall, is a past Tevis winner, a 20 plus buckle winner, on the Board of Governers for the Western States Trail Foundation that puts on the ride, a local (lives just off the trail), and overall one of the classiest acts and nicest people in this sport. (BTW--his horse looked absolutely outstanding and he did a great come-from-behind race to come in 2nd.)
Regarding someone questioning how a horse could fall of the trail and be tragically killed: it is a very challenging trail featuring natural threats throughout the entire course. As we all know, our sport can put us in some tricky situations, and sometimes bad luck can strike. One of the reasons the Tevis buckle has such bragging rights is because it represents the accomplishment of you and your horse successfully negotiating all the 100 miles of trail through some of the toughest terrain imaginable.
