[RC] Welts on back - Ridecamp Guest

    Carey Brock cbrock@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
My horse develops welts on her back after longer rides. The welts appear about an hour after we pull the saddle. This happens when we ride in mountainous country with lots of downhill. We use a Sports Saddle, Toklat woolback pad with foam inserts, breast collar, and crupper. My guess is that we need to tighten the breast collar and crupper one more notch each to avoid the saddle/pad rubbing against the hair on downhills. We want to get into LD and endurance. But we can't start that if we can't get past 4 hours. Any thoughts from those of you who put in long hours and lots of miles? Will other pads help? She is an ultra thin-skinned chestnut. Will we ever make LD rides with tissue paper skin? Any and all suggestions are welcome.
