[RC] Pre-Ride VC Issues and a few others - Randy H Eiland

To Roger Rittenhouse AERC #8263 from Randy Eiland, AERC #39 (and Blue
    Wind #7) ,

You wrote the following message and I will answer after each point-
    Here goes with my opinions;

    ***************

RR -1. CRI at all rides at all Vet Checks NOT AT THE FINISH.

RE - I think CRI has its place but should be used at the discretion of
the Vet..some Vets don't really understand how to use the CRI for any
purpose other than a reason to pull the equine. Uneducated use of the
CRI has no useful purpose, and I have not yet seen data or proof that CRI
at every vet check serves any useful purpose except for "window
dressing". I see no need for its use at the finish except possibly in BC
    judging.

RR- 2. NO chasing hazing of horses by anyone at the VC to obtain a trot.
    Crop=
    s for
unruly horses only, NOT to make a horse trot.

RE - I have no problem with hazing...I think any experienced horseman,
much less a Vet, can see the difference between an exhausted equine and
one that just doesn't see any reason to trot out without the rider. imo,
this is a training issue. not a conditioning issue.

RR- 3. Fix COMPLETION PULSE to 64 for 50 miles and up (NO more lower 60
    pulse=
    for completion).

RE - Rides need the ability to adjust to the ambient conditions...

RR- 4. Completion time at finish LEFT as is at one hour - incudes pulse
    recov=
ery and vet out process. (NOT the 30 minute pulse recovery I have seen at
    a few rides)

RE - No real conviction on this...I think an equine that does not recover
in 30 minutes is probably having a problem.

RR- 5. More then ONE VC on 50 milers and above. Some standard on the
number of VC per mileage and conditions- yes within reason- may not
    apply=
    to ALL
    rides.

RE - There are no facts, data, or statistics that support the need for
anything like this. As you know, several of us have worked on data
studies of vet checks, number of vets at rides, ratio of vets to entries,
etc. and there are no correlations that support the need for, or are
related to, what you propose. AERC does not have a problem, if it is
not broken then it does not have to be fixed.
