If Thoroughbred conformation is any clue to success in racing, most of the top TB racehorses have very proportional backs--ie they tend to fit the "ideal" proportion where the body can be divided into three equal circles, and thus the back is only a third of the overall body length.  I don't think that Arabs are "selected" for racing because they have longer backs--I think the ones that race well despite longer backs would race even better if they were put together with better proportions.
