For rides here in the north woods where it is cold (about freezing) and rain and/or snow, we use gloves made from neoprene.  this is the same stuff used for wet suits and neoprene girths.  They are made and sold for ice fisherman and duck hunters.  Most of the mail order sporting goods houses like Cabellas sell them.
 
While your hands look like prunes by the end of the day they are warm.  The feel of the reins is quite good through them.
