Jeri, thanks for the reply.

40 wide would be hard for me, the way the barn is set up, but I could make
them pretty long. Our pastures are aprox 30 acres each,  but I'm not willing
to put outside horses with my mares and babies.   Now, I'm thinking about
20x40 or 20x50 pens and cross fence one of the pastures (10 acres?) for
boarder turnout.  that may be the best answer.  If I'm reading your response
correctly, your concern is for self-exercise and play-time, not grazing
(since they would have hay in their pens.)
