Re: Re: pads for rocky rides

Nelson uses St. Croix Eventers most of the time and when he pads, he uses
plastic with Equi Pak. It's wonderful stuff. Not cheap though. The gun to
dispense it runs about $50-60 and a tube which can do 2-4 feet depending on
how deep the cupping of the sole is runs about $25. Oh, don't forget
shipping. If we think there may be a need to remove a pad sooner than the
horse might be reshod, ie. possibility of abcesses or owner just wants it
out after a particular ride, we use gutter guard instead of a plastic pad
and it can then be cut out when needed. We haven't had any problems using
Equi Pak in muddy conditions or any other. One of our clients finished the
Shore to Shore using the stuff and her horse never had a sore step. What we
like about it is that it fills all the cracks and crevices. And STAYS that
way. We have never had any problems with thrush or yucky stuff getting
under the pad. Maybe a little dirt and sand around the very edges but not
the amount of stuff that can get it with silicone or pine tar. And you can
only use pine tar with leather pads and both pine tar and silicone are
famous for working their way out. They just can't fill a hoof like Equi
Pak.
