Melanomas in grey horses are *very* common. As a rule of thumb, most greys
over the age of 12 have 'em, whether you can find them or not.
Most of the time they are benign in greys. Occasionally a benign melanoma
in a grey will undergo a transformation and become malignant.

OK, great, another friggen thing to worry about.  Good thing melanomas aren't contagious cause with the number of grey Arabs I see at ridecamps, all endurance horses would have them if it was.  And I just bought a new Arab (I've named him Mohammed), and guess what color he is?  Flea bitten grey, just like Rebel except Mohammed has a lot more flea bites. "Hey, Moe, where'd you get all those flea bites?"

My question is this:  Is a flea bitten grey, one heavily spotted with chestnuts, less prone to melanomas, or is a grey a grey, with or without flea bites?  This might be a silly question, since most greys I see are flea bitten.  And if it is a silly question, it might as well be me who asks.

cya,

Howard (the wife doesn't like the name I've chosen for our newest addition to the family, so the name might not stick.  She never did like the 3 Stooges; I think it's a male thing)
