Heat Related Emergencies......and You!

Here are some waring signs and treatments of Heat Exhaustion and Heat
Stroke. I picked up this pamphlet at Lake Mojave this summer.
HEAT EXHAUSTION: 1. Moist & clammy skin usually pale 2. Pupils dilated 3.
Normal to below body temperature 4. Weak, dizzy or faint 5. Headache 6. no
appetite, nausea. EMERGENCY CARE: 1. Move to a cool area, apply cool wet
compresses to skin under arms, around neck and ankles, fan lightly. 2.
Have victim lie down and elevate feet 8-12 inches. 3. If conscious, give
person small amounts of cool water at a time. If unconscious, sponge with
cool water. 4. If vomitting, stop giving fluids. Seek medical attention
immediately.
HEAT STROKE: 1. Dry & and hot skin, usually red 2. Pupils constricted 3.
Very high body temperature 4. Coma or near coma unconsciousness 5. Pulse
strong and rapid. EMERGENCY CARE: 1. Remove from heat, maintain airway 2.
Remove clothing and pour cool water over body, fan briskly. Keep out of
sun. 3. Place cool packs under patients arms, around neck and ankles. Seek
medical attention immediately.
