HELP!!!!

Please send any and all suggestions!!  All three of my horses have dry 
balding and cracking in their arm pits.  It looks really painful :(  I just 
noticed this yesterday so I washed the area and put trail rites ointment and 
some bag balm on the it.  I want to be able to help this asap so I was 
wondering if anyone else has had this happen to their horses and what you do 
to help them heal.  Also I am wondering what may have caused this.  It has 
been really hot here with a number of flies and mosquitos.  Could that be 
contributing?  Please help.
