I call it the Black Beauty theory.  In Black Beauty, they almost killed him
by watering him after he ran all the way to get the Doctor - that little
piece of fiction has probably led to many dehydrated horses!

Many years ago I was giving a distance riding clinic to 4Hers and tried to
stress that horses needed to be allowed to drink on trail.  We went out for
a little loop and when we got to the creek, most of the leaders and parents
wouldn't allow the kids to let their horses drink.  I guess they didn't
believe me!!
