Tough.  Smile sweetly.  Ask them if they would prefer to be pulled now, rather than to wait, or if they want a more thorough evaluation later to see if their marginal horse has improved to the point that it can continue or not.  :-)  And believe it or not, the caring riders observe, and come and thank you later...
