"Competition" in this sport is first and foremost "us against the
trail"--and against the myriad of things that can wrong and cause us to
fail to complete.  How you place in relation to other riders comes only
AFTER that....that is why 'to finish is to win' and 'to finish first, you
first have to finish'.

And as Howard says, anyone who pulls their own horse when they would have
been allowed to continue is in a special category of 'winner'.
