Re: Strongid & tapes

I researched this one on the Horseman's Advisor website. I don't know
if I like promoting myself as The Definitive Answer, but I did research
this recently ... (The only thing I find weird is that with dogs, we
treat roundworms with pyrantel, but tapes with panacur - am I right? And
with horses it seems the other way around. Susan????)

TREATMENT: Give Strongid paste one time at 6-9 mg/lb body weight, which
is 2-3 times the normal dosage. I also understand that Strongid C can
be used on an equivalent dosage basis (not 2-3x normal, but 6-9 mg/lb)
but that the actual math is different because pyrantel pamoate and
pyrantel tartrate have different molecular weights. I used 10x the
normal dose - they thought it was weird but ate it with some coaxing.

Also, it is now stated that Strongid C for 60 days will kill tapes.

IMPORTANT: The best time to treat for tapes is in the dry summer
weather (unless you believe you have a significant infestation, then
ASAP) because the life cycle includes a pasture mite and tapeworms are
contracted during that season.
