Fear

I must say that I admire the wisdom of the last few posts regarding Rhonda's horse.   I have had horses that can do no wrong, and even if they do something screwy, I find the humor in it.  I have had horses that if they shake off a fly, I jump, anticipating getting crushed, dragged, trampled or thrown. Then they get jumpy, because I was.   It becomes a vicious cycle.  I would be tempted to work that young horse in the round pen, a nice safe enclosed spot. With an experienced helper. I would get on once. I would make sure that when I mount the horse, I did it well, not pulling her mouth or dragging the saddle over.  (You should have seen the people I had over here riding last week--Geez did they mount crappy)  A young green horse isn't going to know how to take care of you.  You are the leader. You have to get on well, it may mean practicing  on your old horse, on both sides, building up your muscles. Are  you just getting an adrenaline rush or a deep seated terror?  If the horse still terrifies you, she will know it.  Her horse brain will be thinking, "What kind of lion is lurking to scare mom so badly?".  It is contagious.  I have heard of dog show people eating mints so that  the dogs  can't smell their anxiety on their breath. It was on animal planet.  Do you think the horses can smell our nerves?  That would explain why they behave so crappy at horse shows sometimes, ehh?  They can certainly feel the quivering of legs through the saddle.  If you can't settle down and be happy and content with this horse, sell it.  My silly mare has scared the crap out of me a few times, a few months ago she bolted at a gallop down a real steep hill, just for the fun of evading a parked tractor.  Ha Ha   She thought it was funny. I had to get off, my legs were shaking like jello. I waited a while and walked until the adrenaline went away, and then we were friends again.   There are horses I can't be friends with. Those with an "every man for himself" attitude. Those that would jump off a huge cliff to avoid a new rock.  Sell them.  Life is too short to ride sucky horses.  Ride a horse that you have delightful dreams about.   Beth
