Re: Wound treatment Schreiners

Denise Johnson dollyjj@earthlink.net
Boy do i have a story about Schreiners. A real cowboy had his horse stalled next to mine for a few months
last year. His name is Cowboy Red. His horse is called Horse. A caretaker found Horse mid morning one day
with a 8' section of 1" rebar stuck like Cupid had shot it through Horse's check and out the other side near
his jawbone. Horse was needless to say in an "odd" predicament. David the caretaker didn't have a clue what
to do, while Horse was spinning around with this head ornament. He phoned everyone. By the time Cowboy Red
arrived in from work, Horse had somehow removed the rebar. The entry wound was a nice round hole in his
check. The exit wound near the jawbone was more widened due to the movement of the rebar. The vet came and
suggested immediate transportation up to Helen Woodward center for extensive vet work. Well Cowboy Red
doesn't have that kind of money. When i saw the horse the same day all i thought was goodbye Horse. The
wound was awfully nasty looking and i knew that something inside his head had to be messed up. Though you
couldn't see clean through it looked like you could. Cowboy Red set about on his own treatment method.
I thought nice try Cowboy Red but it does look really hopeless. He used pencillian shots to fight infection,
Schreiners to heal and fight infection, and betadine to clean up and dissinfect.

Day after day, twice daily he'd clean and apply Schreiners. Horse acted as if he was a little sore necked
and that was all. He ate and drank with no problems. Slowly the wound was healing, from the inside out.
The vet never came back after the initial call. Within 30 days most of the healing was done. Today Horse
has only a trace scar on his check.

Lessons learned: never think a horse is finished no matter how bad it looks; use Schreiners
on wounds; and follow Cowboy Red's med advice, a long term Schreiners believer.

I should have documented Horse's recovery with photos, as it was truly a testament to Schreiners product.

Btw, how Horse achieved this feat was by leaning or scratching his head on the rebar and popped a weld; thereby
loosening up one end and struck it into his jaw; then became frantic and pushed the rebar through; then broke the
other side's weld.
