My stallion does well in a sidepull at home and during the last part of a
ride when he settles down.  I am hoping he eventually will be able to go in
a sidepull all the time.  It is something you should experiment with AT HOME
to start and perhaps carry with you to try on the last few miles of a ride.
I always carried my bit when I started using one just in case I needed to
put it back on.  I am working on a design for a halter/bridle/sidepull for
our stallion so we can start the ride in a bit and then switch to the
sidepull anytime we want by just removing the bit.  But I do agree that you
shouldn't change something that is working just before a ride or at a ride.
