Re: Painted horses

Actually, I do. And there will be lots of other photographers as well. It
should be fairly spectacular even for a measly 20 km. We had about 20 riders
out this morning about 8:30 am to try out the distance. Weather was
gorgeous, clear and warm enough for me to shed a sweatshirt and the horses
were all higher than kites, but well-behaved in a rubbery sort of way. Even
Radar, who really hasn't quite understood this desert thing after spending 4
years doing 20 metre circles and schooling jumps, had a light go on and
decided that this whole thing looked like a lot of fun. We left the club and
rode in a fairly straight shot past the Sun Temple and the pyramids at Abu
Sir, where they found a new tomb last year, then past some Japanese
excavations on a bluff and on towards the pyramids at Dahshur. We got fairly
strung out at times which gave the sillier horses something to do in
catching up with friends and then walking slow to chat. There was nothing
set up for food or water for the horses or riders, so it was just a plain 20
km hack out and back, and my water bottle pack that I got from Teddy made me
a very popular person. We were probably about 60%/35% stallions/mares with
the very odd gelding like Radar thrown in and there was only one problem on
the whole ride when the owner/rider of a lovely stallion (sire to my Nazeer)
figured that Ganan would be paying more attention to what he was doing (ie,
galloping across the desert) than to Mishmish, another stallion who was
galloping about 4 metres away. WRONG! Ganan happens to hate Mishmish,
although no one knows why, and tried to jump on him. This happened about 4
metres behind me and to the right and Radar didn't take the slightest
notice. The two riders separated the boys and we all got on with it. No harm
done, but we know that those two will never ride in the same vicinity. This
was about at the 17th km and they had plenty of energy to act like fools.
One good note for me was that after doing his 20 km in about 1 hr and 45
minutes, Radar was wet under the saddle only and his heart rate was 50
before I got it off, so he should be just fine. I'd like to say that all the
horses were like that, but they weren't. We are expecting as many as 100
riders on the 12th and I bet only about 1/2 qualify. But they're coming from
all over, polo, trekkers, all sorts and everyone's really excited. We're
going to try to do a webpage. I'll let you know when we get that together.
