Jo Anne, The name is 'Back Country Horseman of America'. The reason for
their existance other than teaching 'Leave no Trace' horse camping is to
'keep trails open for stock use'. Thats what they DO! If people are
interested in keeping trails open in their own area they could join an
already existing Chapter or open a Chapter. I'm an endurance rider and as of
yet have never even packed into the wilderness to camp. But this group is
'in the trenches', doing the work so I've joined the local Chapter and work
on keeping trails open in this area. I have a meeting this morning with
FS,BLM, Parks & Rec. They just successfully renegotiated opening a section
of the Pacific Crest Trail that most didn't even know was closed! They also
have a MOU already in place with the FS, BLM, and NPS. Its called a
Memorandum of Understanding. Its built on good relations and an opportunity
to work with these Governmental Agencies. Which in turn affords us a voice.
Lets put our voices together people. Also a newsletter is mailed to members
letting us all know what work is being done on what trails across America by
individual Chapters etc. I agree with you we all need to be pro-active,
unfortunately most don't take notice until they risk losing thier own trails
.

Joy Trevey, Legislative Director for the Illinios Valley Chapter of the Back
Country Horseman
