RC: the weight of salt in grams

Barb Peck bpeck
bpeck@ together.net

In December I weighed out some salt.

 1/4 teaspoon = 1.5 g
   1 teaspoon = 6.0 g
 3 tsp = 1 Tablespoon = 18.0 g

Iodized salt is iodized by Mortons and Gargill (Canadian Co.)
at the rate of 70 micrograms/gram.

White iodized table salt is 61% chloride 39% Sodium.
Lite iodized table salt replaces half the sodium with potassium.

Red loose mineralized salt's composition is expressed
in ppm which has to be converted to mg for the salt and
the other micro-minerals, then converted to it's contents in
grams.

The following mix is in the correct ratio to supply close to
the minimum daily requirements for an idle horse for
Sodium, potassium, chloride, and iodine when 18 to
36 grams is fed daily.

3 parts red mineralized
2 parts potassium chloride ("Lite" salt)
1 part sodium chloride (white table salt)

Please note....... this meets the horses minimum daily
requirement for salt, it's not a complete electrolyte
replacement when heavily sweating.

My references for the daily requirements were
from The National Academy of Sciences Press
"Mineral Tolerances for Domestic Animals",
and afew other sources that I can't remember now..
(I'm posting from work, not home).

Hopes this helps.

Barb
